''metabolism''

metabolism / November 15 – December 11, 2013 The exhibition “Metabolism” is an invitation to a pictorial feast.  Food, from Eve’s forbidden fruit till today’s genetically modified soya,  is not only an absolute necessity to survive but it can be many more things  like enjoyment, guilt, communication, art or medicine.  Food has a thousand uses and symbolisms. The exhibition approaches  the meaning of food aesthetically and philosophically. The portrayal of still life  is part of a long tradition in art. The Flemish baroque portrayals of luxurious food,  the smell of hot chocolate from Liotard’s painting «La Belle Chocolatiere»  and the gummibear chandelier by Ya Ya Chow, which reminds us that food  can also be a chemical enjoyment. The show touches on our relationship with food,  the symbolisms accompanying it but also raises issues and problems relating to  the production and disposal of food in an overcrowded and hungry planet.
